Pet Training Series Part 5 - Knowing and Tracking Your Pet Training Goals

By now you know that there are many different factors that will affect your pet’s training. Such factors as your own consistency, where you bring your pet, and the interaction of other people will likely give you some pause as to whether or not training is right for you and your pet. However, do not get discouraged.

This next lesson will show you exactly what you can do that will go a long way to insure your pet training success. This lesson is all about Pet Training Goals.

We all hopefully know what goals are and how to set them in our own lives. But our pet cannot set their own goals. This means that we need to set them ourselves and we need to do it properly.

If you have not done so yet, this is the perfect time to consider starting a pet training log or journal. A simple notebook or paper pad will do but I prefer a hardcover journal. These are available at Wal Mart or any local bookstore. They have a hard cover to withstand abuse and many come with a ribbon page marker for help locating your last entry.

Setting Pet Training Goals

Lets first take a quick look at the key principles of goal setting and how to apply it to your pet training.

Goal Setting Steps:

  • Be sure your goals are valid
  • Do not have Contradicting Goals
  • Choose Specific Goals
  • Make sure goals are high but attainable
  • Word goals in a positive nature
  • Write Goals on paper in detail

Above are the basic goal setting structures for any aspect of life, so why not use them for puppy training? There is no reason not to apply these rules. So lets do just that.

Pet Training Goal - Gentle and well behaved dog behavior when people visit

  • Pet should sit and wait patiently when people enter the door - A valid goal
  • This goal does not contradict desired calm, gentle, and desired behavior - check
  • Specific goals -
    • Pet should sit on command
    • pet should stay on command
    • pet should not move when door opens
    • pet should not move when person enters
    • pet should move only on command
  • Goal is high as this will require long-term training depending on pet, but very attainable with consistent practice.
  • Positive Goal - Our pet will behave in a calm, pleasant, well-behaved manner when people are greeted at the door. Pet will sit patiently until allowed to move.
  • Detailed Writing - Abie, our presently hyper active GSD normally likes to run and jump when there is someone at the door. By training her not to react in this manner we will be able to allow her to greet people safely when they come to visit. Her training will consist of repeated attempts to have her sit at the door, then told to stay, while someone opens the door. If she moves, the door will be closed and the process started over again. This will be repeated until the desired behavior of sitting and staying until told is achieved.

The above example is not merely some made up scenario but is in fact the actual routine used with our dog Abie. This is one of the exact behaviors we have working on her with as this is a most destructive behavior.

Tracking Pet Training Goals

Once you have written your above pet training goals into your pet training journal the next step will be to start tracking your progress. This can be done quite easily and with a little time you will notice improvements in your pets behavior.

To start I generally keep track of the following items.

  1. number of times a command is said before response. You should not use a command repeatedly if possible. But it does happen. The general rule is say once, wait a few seconds. Then repeat.
  2. How long the stay duration lasted. Once seated and told to stay, movement or lack of concentration can cause the dog to move. The longer the better.
  3. What if any distractions were there.

These criteria will change depending on what you are training. But these are good basics, as they record command attempts, time, and potential problems.

The normal behavior pattern should also be recorded as a starting point. So what I can do is make a time line.

Abie Door Training Start -

  1. Start - normal pattern - Abie runs to door when any motion made toward the door. Waits until first door opens, then pushes through storm door.
  2. Day 1 Session 1 - Abie told to sit, took 3 tries. Abie told to stay. Abie will stay if no movement or distractions arise.
    1. Open Door causes Abie to rise and go towards door
    2. Repeat
  3. Day 1 Session 2 - As inner door seems to trigger reaction to move, training consisted of working this one problem for several minutes until door no longer triggers reaction
  4. day 1 Session 3 - Abie told to sit, took 2 tries. Abie told to stay. No movement on first door.
    1. Opening handle to outer door causes reaction to move. Repeat
    2. repeat several attempts with outer door until outer door no longer causes her to react
  5. Day 2 session 4 - Abie will now sit on first command. Sits well. told to stay. Abie stayed until I was standing with both doors fully open. She did twitch twice as if to move, but a second stay command kept her still. Told to release allows her to come out the door.

As you can see within 1 day a noticeable change has taken place. All of these sessions did not take place one after the other and each took about 10-15 minutes before she would move to the next step. Just like walking you have to take one step at a time. Within a few days she was willing to sit at the door and wait for us.

When Abie decided she was going to move because of the door I simply closed the door and restarted. This shows the dog that the door opening was not the proper time to get up. Same with the second door or any other distraction. If someone comes in the room, repeat the entire process if your dog breaks the stay.

Tracking your pets goals is very important. Otherwise how will you really know if they are making any progress. Track it the way you want to, as long as you are tracking it. Write down what steps you take, what reaction occurred, and what corrections needed to be done. Setting and tracking your pet training goals will be the next building block to actually succeeding where others fails.

Flea Killers

Fleas are among one of the most well known and hated pests in the modern world. Like mice, rats and other pests, fleas can be carriers of disease and live from the blood of their victims. Their bites are painful, causation a red mark that can swell, itch and persist for two weeks. They will attack humans, cats, dogs and birds, making them versatile predators that do not distinguish between their prey. Once an infestation has occurred in your work or home, fleas can be very difficult to remove. As with many other pests, it is much easier to protect against an infestation than to rectify one once it has begun. You may need to resort to highly toxic chemicals, such as those found in flea foggers, to get rid of the pests once they have begun to breed.

If you are faced with fleas, knowing how they breed can help you battle their infestation. Like many species, fleas require humidness to breed. If you cut the total of humidity in the air within your home, the number of larvae that survive to get full fleas is drastically cut. This can be done by buying a dehumidifier and letting the air in your home go dry. While this may be objectionable for some, doing this for several weeks will greatly reducing the number of fleas in your home.

While you are dehumidifying your home, you can vacuum up a great many fleas. By vacuuming all of the rooms in your home and immediately disposing of the vacuum-clean bags, you can also greatly cut down the number of fleas.

Using your pets as living flea killers is another option. Medications such as Advantage and Front Line are intentional to kill the fleas that your pet is exposed to. This allows you to prevent your pets from being bothered while reducing the number of fleas that can breed.

All of these things can be used together to help combat the problem of fleas. However, you should be careful with the use of chemicals and natural flea products. Both the chemicals and natural problems can be toxic to pets and children. When you begin using these, you need to make certain that you take the time to protect your family against he products you use. If you set repellent wards around your home, inform your family and place them where your pets cannot access them.

If you take the proper precautions, you will be able to make your life a whole lot more comfortable, as well as protect your family and pets from diseases and discomfort.

Keep a Healthy Dog With These Essential Diet Guidelines

Part of being a responsible dog owner is to make sure that your dog has a well balance diet. Make sure you include foods that contain protein, carbohydrates, and good fats.  By providing your dog with a well balanced diet you are making sure that she has a long, happy, and healthy life. A proper diet will also provide her with a beautiful coat and bundles of energy.

The question that many people have is… What is the proper balance for my dog’s diet? Follow this general rule of thumb…

2 - 25% protein
20 - 35% fat
40 - 60% carbohydrates
Along with these essential nutrients you should also provide your dog with vitamins and minerals.

However, keep in mind that dogs have very different needs than us. One of the most important supplements that they need is vitamin B1. This is because dogs are not very good at storing vitamin B1 in their bodies and it is absent from many dog foods.

Feeding your dog only lean meat will not provide them with all the necessary nutrients. In nature, dogs eat their entire prey which contains everything they need. As good owners we have to try and imitate their natural environment as closely as possible.

Studies have been done to look at the habits of dogs and what they eat. These studies have shown that dogs prefer cooked and mushy food over those that are raw and meaty. However, dogs are not usually very picky and many will eat almost anything we give them. We need to make sure that we are providing what is best for them.

Most dog owners tend to feed their dogs commercial dog food. These often have essential vitamins and minerals. The manufacturers know that the dog food must be stored easily so they package them in convenient ways such as bags or cans. Dog owners just love that. The downside is that usually the more convenient and attractive the packaging, the more expensive the food. Wouldn’t you agree?

This is one reason why more dog owners are now cooking at home for their dogs. The problem here is that it can be hard to provide our pets with the proper balance in their diet this way. We should not give them the things that we cook and eat ourselves.

The key is to do some research and make sure that you are providing your dog with the best possible source of her nutrition to ensure healthy pets.

Things can go wrong if we are not careful with what we are giving our dogs. Some dogs have a hard time digesting lactose so too much milk powder in their food can lead to scouring. Instead of creating your own recipes a better way might be to search for recipes that have been time tested.

Another is consideration is to be careful of bones. Although dogs do enjoy chewing on a good bone, you should try to avoid most of them. Small, cooked bones are more likely to splinter posing a risk for your dogs. You should try and stay away from cooked chicken bones, lamb chops, and especially fish bones. Fish bones are probably the worst of all.

What is best for your dog can be learned over time. If a certain meal did not sit well with her she will probably avoid it in the future and you can make a note of that. Just remember to follow the unique requirements of your dog’s diet. This will ensure that your dog is happy and healthy.

The Basics of Puppy Care

If you think all you have to do is play with your puppy and feed him in order to take care of him, think again.  Puppy care is a huge responsibility and it is much like taking care of a small child. If you have a full breed puppy, you have to find out how to take care of the specific breed because the protocol can be different.  For example, Chihuahua puppy care requires certain types of food for optimum health and different vaccinations than other breeds.

Food Basics of Puppy Care

Choose a dry food and avoid cheap, generic brands in puppy care.  Buy only brand name dog foods to make sure you are getting a quality product.  If you have a large breed dog, choose food made for large breed dogs.  Don’t judge dog foods by their vitamin and mineral content because often times over-supplementation of vitamins and minerals can lead to hip dysplasia.
Try not to give your puppy too many special treats like milk bone biscuits in puppy care because they are not that nutritional.  Canned dog food is okay on occasion but it is best to stick with dry food because it is inexpensive, easy, and better for your puppy’s teeth.  In puppy care it is important to avoid giving human food to your puppy because it can cause digestive problems.

In young puppy care, it is best to offer food three times a day.If your puppy doesn’t feel hungry that often, you can reduce the frequency and when he reaches around 10-12 weeks of age you can start feeding your puppy twice a day.  It’s not good to feed your puppy only once a day because he will get so hungry in between meals that he will overeat at the next meal.

In puppy care, it is best to let your puppy eat as much as he wants during a 15 minute period and then take the dish away.  It’s not good to provide freely available food.  This can lead to your puppy becoming overweight and getting hip dysplasia and other health problems later in life. When overfed, your puppy will also stop enjoying food altogether.

The Importance of Shots in Puppy Care

Your puppy loses his natural immunity to disease somewhere between six and sixteen weeks of age.  Fortunately there are new vaccines that can protect your puppy from most diseases. It is very important to take your puppy to the vet and get vaccines but until then, make sure your puppy stays away from areas frequented by other dogs.  Also avoid letting your puppy come into contact with stray dogs and sick dogs.

So there you have it.Puppy care may not be as easy as you thought it was but by following the right protocol your puppy will be healthy.  The most important aspects of puppy care are proper feeding and shots.  If you follow these basic steps, your puppy will be healthy and vibrant and will rarely have to see a vet.

Stop Dog Barking

One of the worst problems dog owners have is teaching their dogs to stop barking for no reason. This is a problem that is annoying and it will get worse as your dog ages. Many dog owners will find that adult dogs can be almost impossible to train once barking has become a habit. The real key here is to get your dog trained before the barking becomes a bad habit.

In this article were going to take a look at some of the things that you can do to control dog barking.

The first step to learning how to stop dog barking is finding out why your dog is barking. This isn't always as obvious as you might think. You might have a nasty neighbor who likes to tease your dog. Many dog owners do not even know that their dog is barking all the time when they are gone. There may be some neighbors kids who walk by everyday and throw stones and scream at your dog. There are times when you will have to think outside the box.

Once you know what is causing your dog to bark you can go about training your dog. In some cases no training is even needed. For the examples above you would need to move your dog inside to stop your annoying neighbors from bothering your dog.

Another very common reason dogs bark is out of boredom. This is often when your dog just keeps barking and barking for no apparent reason. When your dog gets bored like this take him/her for a long walk. If the dog is still barking when you come back, then you may have a different problem all together.

If your are really stuck with this barking problem you may want to consider some devices or collars. There are many dog owners who hate the idea of using a shock collar, but a shock collar will not do harm to your dog. The real key is to use the shock collar correctly. A good option is to look for a collar that lets you play around with the shock settings. This makes sure that your dog will not be harmed in anyway.

Do remember to start your training with defining why your dog is barking first. This will make the training of your dog much easier. There are lots of dog owners out there that have no clue why their dog is even barking all the time. This can often lead to a frustrated dog owner and frustrated dog too. Yes, the barking could be as much of a problem for your as it is for you.

Curb Dog from Jumping Unecessarily

One of the few annoying things in life is visiting a friend or family member only to have their dog jump all over you. This is a normal puppy habit that should right away be stopped in order to ensure yourself and your guests are not knocked over upon entering your home. Always remember that not all puppy habits are cute, this could sometimes become potentially harmful, especially if young children or old persons are knocked down and injured by your dog, no matter how harmless your dog may be at the time.

Knowing you use the correct training technique each and every time, jumping can be a bad habit that can be broken quite without difficulty. Same with all other types of training, the key to dog training is consistency. Inconsistency will only confuse your dog to your techniques. By keeping your training techniques consistent all the time, your dog will know the exact behavior that you expect, and to stop dogs from jumping.

It is very unbecoming to abuse your dog physically in an attempt to train him. This is undesirable in all situations and can only make a wider gap between you and your dog. You are presenting yourself to be undependable with your dog when you abuse them, same as human beings, trust must be earned with dogs. Learn by heart to remember that the techniques used in this article are a far cry from abuse, but the line exists and should be cautiously observed. Having said that, there are two main techniques to training your dog not to jump, both methods of teaching your dog not to jump involve a command. Use commands like “no jump,” but refrain from those like “down,” that are oftentimes associated with the laying down command. This command should be given in a strong firm voice. It doesn’t matter how exhausted you may be on account of your dog jumping, a strong and firm voice is the most effective way for your dog to understand your emotion. From this point onward, there are different techniques you can use with the command.

Few people find that holding the dog’s front paws is a way to train a larger dog so that he cannot get down. This will only frustrate the dog and discourage him from jumping again. When your dog jumps inappropriately, use your command in a clear, firm voice. Then, clutch his front two legs and don’t to let him down for a period of time, this take a couple seconds. Keep in mind that you are only discouraging him from jumping, and not trying to torture your dog. After a few more times, just use the command and see if the dog responds as it should be.

Another technique is to raise your knee as the dog begins his jump. Just raise your knee to lift your foot a couple of inches off the ground and do not thrust or knee your dog. Rather than jumping on your body, your dog will come up touching your raised knee and return to the ground. This technique is not abusive or cruel if done properly and will not physically harm your dog.

All Dogs Require This Essential Training

Brining home a new dog or puppy is always an exciting time. However, to be a responsible owner, there are a lot of responsibility that comes with having a dog. You have to feed her, groom her, provide her with proper health care, and give her a safe place to call home.

Making sure that your puppy has basic dog training is one of the best things you can do for her.

Discipline and Behavior

Having a dog that is alway misbehaving is not something that you want. They can an be an embarrassment and in worst cases, they can be dangerous.

Training requires lots of time and patience, but in the end you will have a well behaved dog that you can be proud of. The bond between you and your pet can be strengthened through training. Take the time to train your dog and set the rules for appropriate behavior. Start as early as possible for the best results.

Dog Obedience Training

Obedience training is also an important part of your dog’s overall training program. There are different levels of obedience training - from very basic training to advanced training.

You should at least provide basic training for your dog or puppy. House training and leash training along with basic commands like sit, stay, come are all considered part of basic training.

Of course, you can always progress to a more advanced level. Training should continue to make sure that you always have a well behaved dog. Destructive behaviors like barking, chewing, and digging can usually be prevented just by including the proper training. Just find a program that meets your needs and provides a results such as Sit, Stay, Fetch.

Puppy Training

Puppy training should start at an early age. Some people wait too long to start training their puppies and it makes it a little more difficult and frustrating. It is a myth that a puppy younger than six months cannot be trained.

Although a puppy has limitations to what she can learn that should not prevent you from teaching her the basic commands from the start. Just do some research to make sure you follow the proper techniques.

There are many different sources of information available - dog training books, ebooks, websites, and even complete training programs. Another suggestion would be to look for dog group training. You can also hire an experienced dog trainer if your budget allows.

Dog Group Training

Most of the larger pet stores offer training classes. Being in a group setting usually makes them cheaper. You can also ask around as your local area animal shelter or other animal groups may offer free or discounted group training classes.

Group training provides your dog with the added benfit of socializing with other dogs and their owners.

Professional and Experienced Trainers

The benefit of a professional trainer is the one on one training that they will provide. Just be sure to ask around for recommendations so that you can find a trainer who is know to provide results.

In my opinion I recommend hiring a professional dog trainer for major issues such as dealing with an aggressive dog. This is definitely not something you want to deal with by yourself.

Conclusion

It is a huge responsibility when you own a dog. But is also our responsibility to make sure we have a well behaved dog that is pleasant and fun to be around. Just be sure that you go into any training program with an open mind and the right attitude and you will find that it is a rewarding experience.

And remember, you can always search for more information about dogs.

New Puppy Care: Getting Started on the Right Path

Now that you are ready to bring your bundle of joy home, start preparing your home so it is properly equipped for new puppy care.  The preparations you need to make and steps you need to take will vary for each different breed. For example Chihuahua puppy care is going to be more challenging and difficult than yorkie puppy care.Make sure you know plenty about the breed of puppy you have and buy a good book about how to care and train for your specific breed.

Your Puppy’s First Night Home

Puppies are creatures of routine so when you first take them home they are going to whine a lot until they feel a connection with you and their surroundings.  Never punish your puppy for whining but also realize that if you constantly attend to your puppy and hold him when he cries, he is going to use crying as a way to get your attention in the future. In new puppy care it is important to have a crate ready so your puppy has a comfortable place to sleep.
Your puppy may cry a lot the first few nights home so it is up to you to let your puppy sleep in his crate in your room or put him in a separate room with food and water.  Some owners may let their puppies sleep in their beds with them but you do have to realize that it will become a habit hard to break. If you do decide to let your puppy sleep with you, make sure you are comfortable with it happening until your puppy is an adult dog.  If you want to make the first night more comfortable in new puppy care, take a cloth or soft toy that your puppy had when it was with his mother and the rest of the litter and put it in his crate.

How to Protect Your New Puppy Care

In new puppy care, it is important to provide a crate or exercise pen where you puppy is safe to explore and play under minimal supervision during the day.  Make sure to leave the crate in an area of the house where you will be so your puppy can see what goes on around him every day.Provide some chewing toys because like human babies, puppies will put anything into their mouths and chew.Don’t leave any unsafe items out that your puppy could choke on and don’t leave any electrical cords exposed.
New puppy care may feel overwhelming at first but if you take precautions and make the right preparations, you will get into a routine that fits you in no time.Don’t stress out about your new responsibility.  Instead, enjoy life with your new bundle of joy and take the steps necessary in the first few weeks of your puppy’s life so that the rest becomes a breeze.

Start Training Your Mastiff Puppy With These Three Principles

A very big part of any Mastiff puppy's early life is play. But were you aware that playtime can also be learning time as well? Play can be a valuable tool in training your Mastiff puppy everything from learning simple commands to teaching them the ins and outs of socializing and what it takes to be a well behaved dog.

There are three basic things that a Mastiff puppy - even one as young as six weeks old - needs to start learning. The first and most useful of those things is simply the word, “No.” You will be using that command repeatedly during your relationship with your dog and so it is very important that he knows it from the start.

And it’s easy. Dogs, even puppies, are adept at recognizing tone of voice. When they learn to associate a displeased, forceful tone of voice with the word no, you will not in the future have to be so forceful in your utterances. But first you do have to get his attention. When the Mastiff pup does something wrong, simply pick him up, gain eye contact and tell him very firmly, “No.” It will get an immediate reaction. Depending on your pup's personality, he will drop his head and become sheepish, growl or attempt to talk you out of it by asking you to play. If either of the latter two happens, you will have to repeat the command to show that you are not kidding.

Then, simply let it go. Put the pup down and keep a watchful eye on his response. A rebellious pup may repeat the action as a way to test you, in which case you need to repeat the process. Be gentle, but be firm and consistent and your pup should get the message.

As for the other things that your baby needs to know, you will probably default to teaching him the proper way to go potty. This is actually easier than you might think, as pups are a lot smarter than they look. But timing iseverything. If you notice a puddle on the floor and your pup has since gone off to play with his ball, the only thing you can do is clean it up and watch him more closely. Don’t rub his nose in it, or he will simply be hurt and confused. What you want to do is catch him in the act. When you see him start to take a tinkle, grab him and take him outside. Chances are he will be so shocked that he will save some for the yard, and when he goes there you can praise him lavishly.

The third thing that your Mastiff pup needs to know is that he should never put his teeth on a human being. This is a tough one, as it is so much fun to play “bite” with a youngster. But you don't want them to play so rough when they are older. So when you play with him, be sure to do so with toys that are okay for him to bite. If he bites when you are trying to pet him, tell him no and give him his toy or put his toy right in his mouth. If he keeps trying, you should pick him up and tell him no. If you are consistent, you should get good results.

When your pup has accomplished learning her first command, or goes outside instead of on the floor and stops puppy-biting, she is well on her way to graduating from a Mastiff puppy to a well-mannered adult.

Should You Trust Your Veterinarian’s Nutritional Advice

Our society is thoroughly convinced of Veterinarians’ qualifications with respect to knowledge of our cats’ nutrition. As a cat owner, we never even consider the alternative. But the question is; could we be wrong?

When we see commercial pet food ads on TV or read their ads in print, we have no reason to doubt their claims. So we, the trusting public, is so convinced by their ads we put the nutritional needs of our pets in their hands.

Unsuspecting pet owners believe what they hear and buy the advertised pet food. Some commercial pet food companies even place a premium price on their products to convince pet owners their product is superior in quality.

Could the commercial pet food companies be hiding the truth from us?

Little nutritional training to Vets is administered in Vet schools and that training is often given by persons that are loyal to the pet food companies. The commercial pet food companies donate money, equipment, banners and free food to Veterinarian schools. What a great long-term business plan - it’s buying loyalty and it puts money in the pockets of commercial pet food companies and the Veterinarians.

If the Veterinarians never question what they’ve been taught and chooses not to do any independent research, they will continue their loyalty to the pet food industry until they retire.

Our domestic cats’ diet should closely resemble the diets of the wild cats that roam the African and asian continents. Commercial pet food companies make these unproveable claims that their foods are nutritional, wholesome, 100% natural and complete. The truth is that their foods violate the fact that cats are carnivores and should never eat stuff they call food.

Because of a cat’s physiology, they cannot digest many of the ingredients included in commercial cat foods. Prolong consumption of carbohydrates and other cheap ingredients will harm and are often fatal to cats. Cats are obligate carnivores and should be fed accordingly.

Although the Food and Drug Administration has been inundated with complaints from consumers regarding their pets becoming ill after consuming foods containing these preservatives; Ethoxyquin, BHA and BHT, the FDA has decided to remain on the sidelines.

Evidence strongly suggests that many Veterinarians have been bought and paid for by the pet food industry. Moreover, it’s unreasonable for us to think they can provide unbias, independent advice regarding our cats’ nutritional needs. Vets lack the training to offer nutritional advice on our pets and making money takes presidence over independent research - educating themselves on the proper nutrition required for our pets should be their main concern but it’s not.

Selling harmful foode to you for your pets is a blatant disregard to the creed they swore to uphold “First do no harm.”

It’s incumbent on you to learn what foods are beneficial for your cat(s). You need to take control of their diets thereby ensuring that they are getting wholesome foods that are beneficial to them.

Maine Coon Cats - Bringing the Outdoors Inside

When you get your Maine Coon kitten, the breeder will often have you sign an agreement that you will keep the cat strictly indoors. Over time, we have learned that indoor cats live longer, healthier lives.

As with everything in life, this thinking is not universal, and many people believe that by keeping your cat indoors you are depriving it of that sense of freedom. This of course is partly true but happily there is a way around it. You simply need to think outside the box and work out ways of bringing the outdoors, Indoors.

So let’s start looking at things through a cat’s eyes. To begin with you have probably got a window ledge in your house upon which your cat can sit, and they will probably do this hour after hour simply watching what is going on. But if you don’t feel that this is quite enough then there is an alternative option.

Another possibility is to have a screened porch or a screen fixed around your porch. This is great because it will allow your cat to have a good view of the world and to enjoy the sun and fresh air without actually letting them out into the backyard or front yard. The only word of caution is to make sure that they cannot jump over the screening.

Many people like to use a harness and leash and take their cats for a walk on the grass. Being outside will not harm your cat unless they are unattended and unrestrained. Buy a good harness and leash and then train your cat, and yourself, to use it correctly.

Of course at first your cat may not be all that keen on using a harness and leash but persist with it and very soon he will associate the harness and lease with having a good time outdoors. And when you go out just remember that your cat may not necessarily want to walk. He may want to just stand or sit around and enjoy the grass or even roll around.

Make sure that your cat isnt bored indoors. Cats have a natural instinct to hunt and investigate. Give him things to do! Purchase toys that enable him to feel like he is chasing prey. Rub new toys in cat nip and hide them in places that your cat can access. Let him use his natural abilities.

Last of all it goes without saying that you must make sure you’re providing the same nutrition and exercise opportunities in doors that are available to cats outdoors. Ask your pet store as to what food is specific for indoor cats or for actual maine coon cats. Perhaps you could even buy or build a small tree house, something which will give them a bit of exercise and a bit of fun getting to.

Keeping your Maine Coon indoors is not cruel. Ideally, your Maine Coon was born indoors, and doesnt know anything different. As long as you can bring a little bit of the outdoors indoors, he will be exceedingly happy, and still enjoy all of the indoor cat benefits.

Do Rendering Plants Have an Impact on Your Cats’ Food?

There are several hundred Rendering Plants across the U.S. They quietly dispose of millions of tons of dead animals, meat waste and fat.

What do you think you would see in Rendering Plants?

It’s not uncommon, in a rendering plant, to find such dead animals as; skunks, snakes, opossums, cat, dogs, circus animals, raccoons, horses and foxes. In addition, the Rendering Plants also transforms billions of pounds of decaying flesh and kitchen grease, from mainly fast food restaurants, into billions of pounds of commercial meat and bone meal, tallow and yellow grease and much of it ends up in commercial pet foods.

Rendering Plants sell their products to cat and dog food companies as well as cosmetic companies. Yet they claim that by removing dead and decaying animals from our city streets, they are doing a public service and not doing it for profits.

Let’s take a look inside

Various animals in all types of conditions lay in piles awaiting their turn to be added to the mixture as swarms of maggots can be seen all over the piles. This is what you would witness inside of a Rendering Plant.

Two men operating Bobcat mini dozer loading the raw materials into a 10-foot-deep stainless steel pit. A giant auger-grinder begins to turn. Popping bones and squeezing flesh are sounds from a nightmare you’ll never forget.

Yellow grease or tallow that’s produced by this process are skimmed off and sent to a hammer mill press where the remainder of moisture is removed and the final product is pulverized into a gritty powder. A shaker then removes excess bone and hair so all you have left are bone meal, yellow grease and meat.

Every day, hundreds of Rendering Plants across the U.S. truck millions of tons of this “food enhancer” to poultry ranches, cattle feed-lots, dairy and hog farms, fish feed plants and pet food manufacturers where it is mixed with other ingredients to feed the billions of animals that meat-eating humans, in turn, will eat.

Are your pets benefiting from these ingredients?

Don’t you think that your pet deserves better than to be fed ingredients from Rendering Plants? So now you know what to do when you see labels on your pet food with ingredients such as; beef and chicken fat, poultry by-products, fish meal, tallow, yellow grease, meat meal or meat by-products - avoid them.

There are additional ingredients, other than the aforementioned, added to pet foods and they include; flea collars from dogs, cats and other pets, Dursban from cattle insecticide patches, euthanized drugs used to put down pets and pharmaceutical leaks from antibiotics in livestock.

In spite of the fact that heavy metals from pets’ ID tags, surgical pins and needles, plastic wrap from supermarket rejected meat, chicken and fish, according to Rendering Plant officials, they would incur too much cost to remove ID tags, Styrofoam trays and shrink wrap so that too becomes part of your pet food.

It’s not unfair to conclude that without Rendering Plants, U.S. cities could be filled with diseased and rotting carcasses. Diseases and bacteria could infect the population but the big question is; is it safe for pet food manufacturers to use products from Rendering Plants in our pet foods?

Rendering plants produce products that are toxic to our pets. Cats and dogs are part of the raw material that Rendering Plants use to produce their toxic concoction and the drug Sodium Phenobarbital used to euthanize cats and dogs is not destroyed in the rendering process. Therefore this drug is part our of our pets foods.

All we as pet owners want is food for our pets that is nutritional, wholesome, and free of harmful ingredients. Time and time again the pet food companies have proven that they simply just will not deliver.

They consistently produce pet foods that are killing our pets and millions of pet owners continue to buy their products and feed it to their pets. Pet owners have refused to invest the time to discover what goes into a bag of their cats’ or other pet food.

There is something that all of you pet owners should realize, you are sentencing your pet to a premature and painful death. Yes, I’m speaking to you if you are one of millions of pet owners buying and feeding your pet commercial pet food. Simply put, if you fail to take time to discover what goes into the food that your pet eats the commercial pet food industry will capitalize on that and our pets will continue to to die prematurely and the makers of this food will continue to laugh all the way to the bank.

Steps To Take Special Precautions for Your Pet

Do you have pet insurance? Even if you haven’t had a run-in involving your pet of late, pet insurance has probably crossed your mind. If not, you may well want to read on if you want to save yourself millions of pounds on maintaining a pet.

Though dog day cares range as far as their services are concerned, loosely put, a dog day care is a stimulating, crate-free environment where you can leave your pet in the supervision of positive, motivational trainers. The most important criterion before deciding to adopt a domesticated rabbit as pet is that you MUST have interest, love and willingness to take great care of your rabbit. There may be schools offering distance certification in pet care, via the Internet, which allows you to study from home and just submit proof of your achievements online.

To recover from the grief of pet loss many people go through a mourning process that is similar to that of losing a human being. Veterinary pet insurance is a kind of insurance made for the pets that provides insurance mainly for the veterinary care. Ever since the beginning of time there has always been the pet and the family, today’s pets have become an integral part of the family, and even considered by some to be a part of the family.

As with human health care insurance, pet insurance pays the health care provider. And also just like human health care insurance, pet health care insurance pays for veterinary care and often for prescription medication as well. Almost all pet care insurance provides health cover that includes cuts, illnesses, accidents, abrasions and also dental expenses.

Buying online pet products can also give you access to a veterinarian of a food expert. If you want to give your dog natural, healthy food, but you don’t have enough time to prepare raw meals for your pet, you can buy some of the food products such as those ready-to-eat freeze dried and frozen materials or raw meals.

Could this be the time to start a pet supplies and accessories business? You can start a business entirely from your own resources, making the treats yourself, with a custom-designed package, and spreading word locally through free samples, and appearances at pet-related events such as dog and cat shows, or pet expos. Discount pet supplies are very important for all those who want to get rid of their stress and want some company within the claustrophobic walls of the apartments.

Web portals can be dedicated to a single pet or one can simply post the photograph and the information about the pet to any of the web sites that specialize in creating such memorials. Most people take a multi vitamin every day as a form of preventive medicine, and there are many forms of preventive medicines available that will help ensure the health and happiness of your pet. A pet an addition member to a family not only brings the happiness and fun but lots of responsibility for its care and well-being regarding its health.

While many people watch their pets live out long lives and then cope with the loss of their pet at an old age, others find themselves faced with the sudden and traumatic loss of a pet through an accident or carelessness. However, another custom that is gaining popularity in Western countries is the cremation of their pet and storing the ashes in a keepsake urn or even in an attractive piece of jewelry that can be worn by the pet owner. Using a good pet carrier will help a small amount to keep your pet comfortable in a warm car, but nothing goes further than common sense, so if parking in the shade means you walk a slightly farther distance, the confidence that your pet is cool and comfortable is its own reward.

Could You Unknowingly Be Abusing Your Cat?

Could this possibly be the case?

Please allow me to educate you. This article could very well upset you but I urge you to read it in its entirety because your cat’s life hangs in the balance.

The most important fact you must always remember is that our bodies are different and therefore our nutritional needs are diverse. Cats are obligate carnivores - they need meat and Mother Nature designed their bodies to efficiently digest meat.

To avoid your cat from developing diet related diseases, you should never feed them dry cat foods. They need a species appropriate diet that consists of meat as a base. This type of diet will help prevent diet related illnesses.

The commercial cat food companies sell large amounts of the cheaply produced dry, bagged cat foods. Cat caregivers purchase this food out of convenience and as a result of misleading ads produced by the commercial cat food companies. Their ads make you think that such things as; fruits, vegetables and large amounts of processed carbohydrates are beneficial to your cat.

Commercial cat food companies will use every psychological tactic at their disposal including ads that bombard you saying their dry foods are beneficial for your cat to putting pictures of fruits and vegetables on their food packages. All these messages are produced to persuade you to purchase their products but you are smarter than that. You are now getting the rest of the story.

If a human was forced to eat a diet comprised of meats and processed carbohydrates, he would face a premature death. This type of a diet for humans would encourage hypertension, obesity, diabetes and as a result premature death. This is the same results you achieve when you feed your cat commercial dry cat food.

Humans cannot thrive on meat and bread alone. We must have fruits and vegetables coupled with exercise in order to live full and productive lives. By comparison, cats must have a meat-based diet coupled with exercise in order to thrive. By feeding your cats a dry commercial food, you are sentencing your cat to a premature and often painful death.

It doesn’t matter what the commercial cat food companies say, the bottom line is that you are responsible for your cat’s nutritional needs. In order to do that, you must arm yourself with the facts.

The commercial cat food companies that are part of a mostly unregulated industry produce cheap, toxic foods for your cat and make claims that the food is good and nutritional. They make those claims to convince you to buy their products. You believe their claims without researching them to uncover the truth. You do this out of love for your cat but this belief can cause your cat a premature death.

Have you ever considered what goes into a bag of dry cat food? It would probably surprise you but your cat could very well be a cannibal because dead dogs and cats have ended up in commercial cat food. For some commercial pet food companies it is common to find the four D’s ( dead, dying, diseased, disabled) animals in their pet food.

Ingredients listed on the bag such as meat meal, animal digest, animal bi-product and meat by-product often times include euthanized animals from Veterinarian clinics, dying circus animals, dead farm animals covered with tumors and road-kill (dead animals found on the side of the roadways).

You would think that they would stop there but they also add toxic preservatives.

Ethoxyquin, BHA and BHT all have been linked to kidney and liver failure in cats are used to extend the shelf life of their foods.

Do you believe that cat food can sit in a hot warehouse for twelve to eighteen months and still be considered nutritional?

Now is the time to take control of your cats’ diet and end the feeding of bad foods to your cat. Always be mindful of the fact that cats are carnivores and in order for them to thrive, they must be fed a meat-based diet and this type of diet will ensure that they will spend many more years by your side.

Little Known Ways To Train Your Dog

Today there are a number of different things that one can do when it comes to training your dog and all which enable you to communicate more effectively with them. There are books that one can read or you could take lessons with a dog trainer so that you learn the right procedures to use. But along with these, there are plenty of dog training free tips available online which you may want to think about using as well.

When you are going to start training your dog, it is best to start it as soon as you can. However, do not think that for one moment that because you have an older dogs you will not be able to teach them anything. This is simply not the case even a more mature dog if trained in the correct way will be able to learn even the most basic obedience lessons.

If you are actually considering using any of the free dog training tips that you see it is important to remember that your dog does not have a very long attention span. So it is important that any training you do with them does not take place for very long. If it does, they will soon become bored and then lose interest in you and what it is you are actually trying to teach them and may well just wander off to find something more interesting.

Also, when training it is a good idea that you try to mix the lessons in with other activities that you will normally do with them and this will help to hold their attention for longer. Also at all times, you should use as much positive reinforcement with your dog during the sessions. But you should only provide them with a reward when they have actually done what it is you have asked them to do.

If you do need to reprimand your dog at any time during the training then make sure that it is short and sharp. Plus you should reprimand them as soon as the problem has occurred and not later on, as they will not understand why they are being reprimanded. Again, this relates to your dog’s attention span and they live for the now rather than in the past or the future.

Above we have offered you a number of different dog training tips that you may want to consider using as part of the training you do with your dog. Below we offer just a few more dog training tips free that you may find helpful as well.

When it comes to training your dog it is important that you establish yourself first as the pack leader (remember dogs are pack animals) and you can do this in a number of different ways. The easiest one is to get them laid down on the floor and start rubbing their belly. As soon as the dog rolls over and shows you their belly to rub they have submitted to you and now see you as the alpha dog (pack leader). By establishing yourself in the position of alpha dog (pack leader) you will find that when the training sessions are underway they will actually progress much more smoothly and easily.

It is important that when you are spending time training your dog you need to remember that it is going to take time. So you will need to have lots of patience and be persistent and consistent in your training methods. If you can achieve this, again this will help with making the training a much more pleasurable experience for both you and your dog. Hopefully the dog training free tips that we have provided above will help you when it comes to training your dog.
